Linux has improved significantly throughout 2020. The OpenSource operating system includes a number of changes, improvements, and new features over the last 2020, especially drivers whose kernel has become increasingly important. However, most veteran users expected other features and features to arrive in the kernel throughout 5.11. The changes were left in the pipeline after exiting kernel version XNUMX.
2021 will be a great year for Linux. It is difficult for this system to succeed in replacing Windows, at work, and in the video game department. However, given the recent problems with Windows and how easy it is, Linux distributions today are very easy for many users to try. And even if they decide to keep using it every day, unless they have special needs.
Therefore, the first half of 2021 will be primarily characterized by these characteristics that have been withheld since last year. These make Linux much easier to use, more comfortable, and encourage people to give it a try.
News expected to be seen on Linux in 2021
The most anticipated news XNUMX is PREEMPT_RT. What is this? This kernel module is intended to bring real-time updates to the kernel. Thanks to them, you can update only certain parts of the kernel without having to completely reinstall the kernel every time there is a new version. This allows you to create a kind of kernel rolling release and implement the changes as soon as they are available, without changing the version. XNUMX, the most anticipated and lagging feature, expected to be realized in 2021.
Also the file system. On the other hand, our first hope is support for Reiser 5.11, the successor to Reiser 2020, which arrived at the end of five years and didn’t have the time to be included in version 4. We also expect to see native support for the Bcachefs filesystem soon. And finally, we expect the kernel to soon include new NTFS drivers created and released by Paragon Software.
Other important changes can be found around Linux games. FUTEX2, on the other hand, is a new system call proposed by Valve to significantly improve the operation of SteamPlay and Proton so that Windows games can be run on Linux. Work is underway to improve Intel’s multi-GPU support. This is currently Fudge, which allows you to use more powerful GPUs more effectively when playing games and editing videos. And finally, Microsoft’s DXGKRNL driver makes DirectX almost officially available on Linux.
Finally, at the end of 2020, we released a new module for the Sony kernel. PS5 controller. It was so close that I didn’t have time to include it in version 5.11.
Kernel 5.11 is now RC2
In the final stretch of 2020, a new version of the kernel, 5.11, has reached the release candidate phase. This means that the development phase ends and the debug phase begins. In the coming weeks, various release candidates will be released that will form a new version of this kernel until this version reaches the stable phase in mid-May XNUMX.
Since the Linux 5.11 feature is closed, there are no changes identified in this article. However, they are already working, so as of 5.12 you can see these characteristics. Now we just have to wait and see what 2021 will keep in our favorite penguins.
